Race Clutch Tips - Start slow to go fast

It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

You may have already heard this saying over the internet or a car meet. But beyond the funny perspective of tailgating cars twice as powerful as yours in corners, this philosophy is more than just a silly joke. Starting out modestly has its benefits, especially when it comes to developing your skillset

Building muscle memory is a crucial part of improving your driving skills. To that effect, the faster the car, the less time it leaves you to react, making the learning process more difficult. This is even more true with grip : stickier tyres usually provide a thinner margin of error at their limit. If you add downforce on top, the switch between gripping and spinning can feel like an on-off button.

On the other hand, a road car with soft suspension and street tyres will be very progressive at the limit, with a wide window of slip angle before complete loss of control. This is an ideal situation for beginners : as everything happens at a slower rate, your brain has the time to register and understand what's happening. You will be able to experiment small changes in inputs and notice the differences it makes with more nuance than just a snap.

If your platform of choice doesn't feature road cars or street legal tyres, a good alternative is to run a wet tyre in dry conditions on a low spec car. As you start being able to catch mistakes and control the car on slip angle, you can slowly move onto better tyres and faster cars.

An example of a great beginner's car that is widely featured in simracing in one way or another is the Mazda MX5 / Miata, which actually inspired the quote opening this blog post, but feel free to try out a few cars in that bracket as well ! The more different situations you put yourself in, the better. So go out and have fun !
